There are approximately 550 abortions every day in the UK. In the US, the figure is 3550. In these countries, the upper limit for abortion is usually 24 weeks. However, due to increasingly sophisticated postnatal care, babies as young as 21 weeks and 6 days have survived premature birth. In mainland Europe, abortion is usually only allowed up to 12 weeks (18 weeks in Sweden, 21 weeks in the Netherlands). The British Parliament recently voted on a bill to reduce the upper limit to 20 weeks. However, it was defeated by 332 votes to 190 and the upper limit remains at 24 weeks in the UK.
